Sierra Maestra + Banda Bacana
Neuadd Powis, Prifysgol Bangor
Sierra Maestra are an outstanding nine-piece son band from Havana who are one of the finest and most popular musical ensembles performing in the Spanish Caribbean today. They were the first group, and remain the best, to play in the old-style son line-up: tres, guitar, trumpet, bongo, güiro and vocals--as during the great days of the 1920s and '30s. They have been the pioneers in reviving this style for new generations and re-introducing it into the Cuban mainstream.
Support is provided by local Afro-Latin funksters Banda Bacana, currently riding high following the release of their chart-topping debut album.

23rd March 2010
Woody Pines
Victoria Hotel, Menai Bridge
A bunch of good ol' boys from Asheville, North Carolina, Woody and his band play everything from jazzy swing band struts to old country blues. Pines and his cohorts might be described as a group that makes the type of American roots music that sounds good coming out of a busted AM radio speaker. In a tinny but effective voice that would make Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan proud, Pines croons about rounders, trains and good gals long gone, over a swinging and unhurried blues picking style that keeps toes tapping with ease. The band's motto -"Born in the mountain, raised in the bluff, we came to shake our feet and strut our stuff" says it all !
"A delightful group with a rock solid sexy old time vaudville hill-billy groove" -Sxip Shirey
Tickets £10 available from us and Palas Print Caernarfon.

16th April 2010
Henry Priestman
Victoria Hotel, Menai Bridge
Another great songwriter - this time from a bit nearer home ! Henry has been successfully writing songs and performing since the late seventies, originally with The Yachts, then It's Immaterial before hitting the big time with The Christians (writing all songs on their 1987 triple-platinum debut) in the late eighties and early nineties. In 2008 he released his first solo album "Chronicles of Modern Life", a little gem packed with witty, pithy lyrics and catchy hooks which became one of the surprise hits of that year. Here's what people had to say about it...
"This is Grumpy Old Men set to music...fantastic" - The Guardian
"...It's just great, it's real...got great songs on it" - Johnnie Walker
"It's absolutely brilliant...he's found his voice" - Bob Harris
"A solo album full of wit and love and disappointment and vitriol...perfect pop decorated with spikiness and anger" **** - Rock n Reel

16th May 2010
The Wilders + Cajuns Denbo
Galeri, Caernarfon
It is four years since "the hillbilly hurricane from Kansas City, Missouri", aka The Wilders, first arrived in the UK to start blowing everyone away. Since then, they have returned each year and won a reputation as one of the most highly-charged and entertaining acts to tour here.
With a line-up including fiddle, guitar, clawhammer banjo, dobro, mandolin, bass and vocals, The Wilders merge classic country roots with whirlwind contemporary energy and a twist of rock'n'roll.
Support is provided by Cajuns Denbo (recently featured on the Mike Harding show on Radio 2) who will be belting out some hot Louisiana rhythms to get things going.
Tickets £13/£11 available from Galeri

DADDY (Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack)
DADDY are Alabama homeboy Will Kimbrough (2005 Americana Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year) and Kentucky-bred Tommy Womack (Two-time winner of the Nashville Scene Best Song Award) who present a seamless mesh of rock, gospel, rockabilly and gritty juke-joint blues.
"DADDY is Americana at its roots-rockingest best - honest music that
makes its case with equal parts chops and smiles."
Billy Altman, Los Angeles Daily News
"DADDY are one, if not THE, FINEST ROCK 'N' ROLL BANDS around."
Maverick Magazine

Sarah Savoy and the Francadians
Victoria Hotel, Menai Bridge
Top Cajun dance band with one foot in the honky tonk and the other in the juke joint ! Louisiana born Sarah Savoy is the eldest daughter of the legendary Marc and Ann Savoy and sister of Wilson Savoy of the Pine Leaf Boys. Over in the UK to play a festival in Yorkshire, this will be their only other UK date. Kick-ass Cajun of the highest order, this is definitely one for the dancers and lovers of Louisiana music in general.
