"The Blackening est le meilleur album de thrash de la décennie." Hé bah voila ce qui arrive quand on laisse Trivium usurper l'étiquette "thrash": on lit ce genre d'horreurs. Restons sérieux. On savait déjà que Machine Head est une éponge à influences qui s'imbibe de tout ce qui est à la mode, mais c'était plutôt discret sur Through the Ashes of Empires. Sur The Blackening, c'est un festival. Vous entendrez dans le désordre:
- Des riffs de guitare à la Judas Priest ou Iron Maiden (l'intro de "Clenching the Fists of Dissent" me rappelle "The Hellion", j'y peux rien, c'est comme ça). Les solos ressortent eux aussi tous les plans heavy classiques assemblés n'importe comment (celui de "Halo" est ultra-clichesque). Et ça ne colle pas DU TOUT avec le power-thrash que Machine Head pratique habituellement. Sur "Far Beyond Metal" de Strapping Young Lad, c'était rigolo. Là, non.
- Des choeurs virils à la Grave Digger ("Clenching the Fists of Dissent", encore).
- Un plagiat des Deftones à hurler de rire au début de "Now I Lay Thee Down".
Et c'est quoi, cette nouvelle manie des compos de neuf-dix minutes ? Sur Burn My Eyes, on allait droit à l'essentiel, en quatre minutes tout était dit. Là, ça s'allonge, ça s'étire, tout ça pour pas grand-chose... Le chant clair de Robb Flynn est cette fois en retrait, c'est toujours ça de pris (mais il est toujours aussi pénible: cf "Halo"). Les fans de Trivium adoreront The Blackening, je n'en doute pas un instant. Mais quand je pense que les deux gratteux qui jouent là-dessus ont écrit Eternal Nightmare, je suis scepticisme, je suis désillusion, je suis consternation. Beaucoup de bruit pour rien.
