Culture
Two sevens clash
CD
£11.99
Are you ready for reggae in its entirety?" Culture''s late frontman Joseph Hill was wont to challenge audiences. Ready or not, Culture's been hurling lightning-'n'-thunder reggae prophesy--live and on numerous classic sets--for nearly three decades. The most feverish of the act's consistently inspired output has to be the apocalyptic Two Sevens Clash, which includes the close-second warrior anthems "I'm Not Ashamed" and "See Them a Come." No matter that 1977 came and went without a ripple; it's all Hill's--a mesmerizing preacher-teacher who's still singing at the crossroads where Rastaman gospel meets Hendrix's acid communion

Jah Thomas
Dance on the corner
CD
£11.99
Promising to be a valuable addition to the span of reggae reissue labels out there, focussing on early dancehall, Roots have hooked up with Jah Thomas' Midnight Rock label to bring this classic early piece of rub-a-dub style back into our open arms and ears. after cutting his teeth at Gemini, and actually most all of the major soundsystems: King Stereograph, Killamanjaro and Burning Spear, Tapetwon, Soul Imperial and then crucially King Jammy's. Early successes with GG Allin enabled this self-produced album and its wickedly saucy lick "Cricket lovely cricket" to achieve deserved yard success. MIxed by Scientist amongst others, Roots Radics band in session, recorded at and edited by King Tubbys - classic!

Junior Murvin
Police and thieves
CD
£6.99
Junior Murvin, along with co-writer/producer Lee Perry, created a certifiable reggae classic in "Police and Thieves". Covered by The Clash and symbolic of its time (the mid-1970s)musically and politically, the song is the centrepiece of an album considered by reggae fans to be one of the greatest albums of the genre.
Murvin sings powerful, intense lyrics with a sweet-sounding falsetto voice (recalling Smokey Robinson), while Lee Perry frames the songs with dark, almost haunted tempos, sharp guitar work and seemingly bottomless reverb. Murvin mixes British/Jamaican angst and fury with gospel fervour, and the tunes stick with you long after the CD stops

King Jammys
at the control.... Essential hits
CD x2
£13.49
Lloyd ‘King Jammy' James is one of Jamaica's legendary music men, as a producer, selector and creator of many classic hits under the King Jammy's label. His mid 1980s productions lead in the integration of synthesizer driven (‘digital') sounds in dancehall reggae. The ‘computer' driven sound of Jammy's Sleng Teng riddim for example, would become the archetype for all dancehall riddims to follow. King At The Controls showcases 20 essential Jammy's hits. Demonstrating a range of styles and artists produced during one of the most prolific periods in his career and dancehall in general. The track list is a who's who of reggae on everything from love songs to hard core party tracks. The mixture of instrumentation and song themes display the popular trends of the time and all contain the vital element of the King Jammy's sound. Bonus DVD contains; original 60 minute retrospective biography with 2006 King Jammy interview. Extensive archival footage, interviews with artists, production crew and family round out this remarkable package

Tappa Zukie

CD
£13.99
Selection of classic period Zukie dubs recorded at Channel One between 1976-79. Numbered limited edition CD on Trojan

The Aggrolites
Self titled
CD
£8.99
Imagine a band of southern California twenty-somethings who play a brand of rocksteady reggae and ska that sounds like nothing less than Wilson Pickett throwing a house party backed by The Meters and The Maytals. This self-titled debut is that rare album that sounds like the real thing; all the grit and tube-warmed funkiness you'd expect from a Studio One recording from say, 1965. Veterans of the so-Cal ska punk scene, The Aggrolites appeal equally to punks raided on Rancid and The Clash and to reggae purists in love with the deep ska of vintage Trojan and Studio One. Nineteen tracks of sing-alongs and instrumentals that sound like instant classics.
